Japan – In July, just a few months after leaving the International Whaling Commission (IWC), Japan began commercial whale hunts for the first time in three decades. Please join us in asking Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzō Abe, to stop commercial whale hunts and rejoin the IWC.

For the first time in 31 years, Japan has resumed the practice of commercially hunting whales. For years, under the guise of scientific research, Japan hunted whales which were ultimately consumed. In December 2018, Japan left the International Whaling Commission, which bans whale hunting to protect dwindling populations. On July 1, commercial whale hunters hit the seas and promptly killed a minke whale. A whale hunter stated, “We were able to catch a good whale. It’s going to be delicious.”

Whales are under siege thanks to increasingly polluted waters – must they be hunted and slaughtered as well?

Sea Shepherd Founder, Captain Paul Watson said, “Whaling in Japan is a dying industry that survives only by the politically motivated injection of massive government subsidies. We have driven the Japanese whalers from the Southern Hemisphere, and now their illegal slaughter continues in their own waters, second in numbers only to the unlawful killing of whales in Norwegian waters.”

Please join us as we ask the Japanese Prime Minister to join the International Whaling Commission once again and halt the commercial hunting of whales – they must be protected, before they are gone forever.
