Charleston Officials – Punish Man Who Threw Dog To Its Death!

Charleston, South Carolina – On March 30, 21-year-old Dangelo Drayton allegedly threw a small chihuahua dog into a tree because he was angry that the dog had pooped inside an apartment. Please join us in asking officials in Charleston, South Carolina, to give Drayton the maximum possible sentence for this cruel crime that claimed the dog’s life!

Dangelo Drayton is facing a charge of animal cruelty for allegedly throwing a small dog into a tree in a fit of anger because the dog had an accident inside an apartment. Drayton was arrested, and now he needs to be punished for this cruel crime! Please join us in asking officials to give Drayton the maximum punishment – a strong message that this WILL NOT be tolerated must be sent! Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Update 8/30/2024: According to the Charleston Solicitor’s office, Drayton was charged with ill treatment of animals, specifically overworking, in the first offense. He was sentenced to 4 years of probation. While we are disappointed that Drayton is not serving time behind bars, we are grateful this was not dismissed entirely. Thanks to everyone who added their name to the petition and helped us fight for justice. 

Update 8/5/2024: D’Angelo Ja’Quon Drayton was sentenced on 3-15-2024. The sentencing language is difficult to understand since it is abbreviated. We have left a message with Ashley Kay from the Charleston Solicitor’s office for a call back. The petition will be updated when we have more information.

Update 12/18/2023: Animal Victory spoke with prosecutor Mallory Haliena and learned that D’Angelo Ja’Quon Drayton has been in prison since July of 2023 and will not be released until May 2024 (or late spring). He is facing four Felony charges (including the animal cruelty charge) for strong-armed robbery, shoplifting, and domestic violence, which could land him in prison for 10-15 years. Ms. Haliena is in discussion with the defendant’s attorney. If he pleads not guilty, she will go to trial.

Update 10/20/2022: Animal Victory spoke with Mallory V Haliena, who is the new prosecutor. She told us he served about six months in jail, not on any charges; it took that long for him to post bail. He is #1042 in line to go to court. Mallory tells us that every time they were supposed to go to court, he would pick up more ( serious) charges, and his attorney has been able to postpone. She said she does not expect any movement in this case until after February of 2023.

Update 6/01/2022: According to the Charleston, SC, General Sessions clerk of court, there is no new court date as of yet. Drayton did have a new robbery charge in 2022, and that has been combined with his animal torture and drug cases. He had a bond set on May 16, 2022, and the new court date will be posted online when it becomes available.

Update 5/01/2022: The case did not proceed to the April trials and is now scheduled to take place between May 2, 2022, and May 6, 2022, or June 9, 2022, and June 14, 2022.

Update 1/12/2022: Animal Victory has learned that Mallory V. Haliena is the new prosecutor who took over the case after David Dutremble left the office, and there is no new court date as of yet. The solicitor did say there was nothing new on the docket.

Update 8/05/2021: Animal Victory has been informed that this case is expected to be heard by September 13, 2021.

Update 03/12/2021: Animal Victory has sent 7,693 signatures and comments, along with the petition, to the new prosecutor on the case, Attorney David Dutremble. David has informed us that the plan for prosecution has not changed from what we previously discussed with Richard Waring, the prior attorney on the case. We still do not have a court date.

Update 08/05/2020: Animal Victory talked with Richard Waring, the Assistant Solicitor in Charleston. Mr. Drayton has been sentenced for multiple unrelated crimes, and he is currently in prison for those charges. Suppose Mr. Drayton decides not to take full responsibility for the animal cruelty case and therefore wants a jury trial. In that case, this will be an uphill battle due to some evidentiary issues. We mention this fact so that everyone is aware that we could quite possibly lose this case if it goes to trial. At this time, Richard Waring is willing to take the case to trial, despite the difficulties involved, as he agrees that this is a serious case that requires Mr. Drayton to receive a prison sentence. If and when Mr. Drayton is convicted, Richard Waring will be seeking the maximum sentence, which for this charge is 5 years. It could be until next year (2021) sometime before the case goes to trial, since this is a relatively new case, the court-run docketing system operates in terms of the age of a case, and there are a lot of instances much older than this one.
