Dexter (Dexter’s Law)

Dexter’s Law was enacted in Florida in 2025 after the horrific abuse of Dexter, a dog whose suffering exposed serious gaps in how repeat and aggravated animal cruelty cases were handled under state law.

Named in Dexter’s honor, the law strengthens penalties for aggravated animal cruelty and mandates the creation of a publicly searchable database of individuals convicted of animal abuse. This registry is designed to prevent repeat offenses, protect shelters and rescues, and keep animals safer across the state by making prior convictions visible.

Once again, it was Debbie Darino—the advocate who helped secure the passage of Ponce’s Law—who played a critical role in getting Dexter’s Law passed.

Public pressure was relentless. The Facebook group Justice for Dexter, organized by Robin Warniment, grew to nearly 3,000 followers and organized ongoing protests outside the courthouse, demanding accountability.

Animal Victory amplified those calls for justice, delivering over 20,000 petition signatures to the Prosecuting Attorney and the presiding Judge, demonstrating overwhelming public demand for reform.

Thank you for adding your voice—public pressure helps drive accountability.

Dexter’s Law also received support and recognition from the Florida Bar Animal Law Association, reflecting growing acknowledgment within the legal community that animal cruelty is a serious crime with public safety implications.

What Dexter’s Law Does

  • Strengthens penalties for aggravated animal cruelty
  • Requires creation of a public animal abuse offender database
  • Helps prevent repeat abuse by increasing transparency
  • Protects rescues, shelters, and adopters
  • Sends a clear message that animal abusers will be held accountable

Why This Matters

Dexter’s Law represents a major step forward in Florida’s animal-protection framework. By combining stronger penalties with public accountability tools, the law helps stop repeat offenders, protect vulnerable animals, and ensure that justice does not end with a single conviction.
