Elderly Dog, Found ‘Almost Frozen To Death’ In Ditch, Reunited With Elderly Owner

Sagadahoc County, Maine – Over the weekend, the Sagadahoc County Communications Center received a report of a dog laying in the road in the town of Arrowsic. Deputy Mark Anderson responded to the call and began searching the area for the dog.

The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office said:

After checking nearby ditches, he located a very cold, female dog, appearing almost frozen to death. There were claw marks where she had attempted to climb out of the ditch before her paw got too cold.

When Deputy Anderson approached, the elderly dog held up her paw and “whimpered heavily” in an apparent plea for help. Deputy Anderson picked up the dog and placed her into his patrol vehicle for transport to the dispatch center in Bath.

The senior dog was met with kindness by the staff. The sheriff’s agency said:

The on-duty dispatchers immediately provided care. She was bundled up in blankets and a portable heater was used to help warm her up. They fixed her a plate of food and once she warmed up and stopped shivering, she ate the plate clean.

Deputy Anderson was determined to find the dog’s owner. The sheriff’s office said:

Deputy Anderson went to work making some lost dog flyers and returned to the area and began knocking on doors in an attempt to locate the owner. It wasn’t long and he figured out who the owner was. He learned the dog was at least 14 years old and was let outside around 9 PM the previous evening.

Deputy Anderson learned that the dog’s owner, an elderly female, had stayed up all night waiting for her pet to return home. The dog was eventually reunited with the woman.

Those involved in the rescue effort were commended:

A huge shout out to Communications Specialist Shaun and Dori, as well as Deputy Anderson, for providing extraordinary care for this animal. The efforts of these three Sagadahoc County employees, without a doubt, saved the life of this precious pet.
Kudos to you!

When Hope Has Faded – Dog Doesn’t Greet Visitors Anymore After over 643 Days At Shelter

Pennsylvania – A homeless dog is growing increasingly hopeless with each passing day. Her name is Rosie and she has been sheltered with the Pennsylvania SPCA for more than 643 days.

On Monday, the animal welfare agency posted a photo of the slumbering dog, explaining Rosie’s reaction as the kennel doors opened to the public:

She didn’t greet potential adopters. She didn’t bark or wag her tail. Instead, she just slept and let the people pass by her kennel as they have done for the past 643 days.

Rosie is losing hope, and she is not alone. According to the shelter, adoptions are at an all-time low, meaning every dog at the facility is facing days of loneliness and despair.

The shelter said:

We have wonderful dogs who are passed over day after day after day. And, the truth is, we don’t know why. Sure, in years past the more difficult dogs would wait longer. but still, their families would come.

Now, we wonder where any families are.

Where have all of the adopters gone? Is inflation too high? Is there a lack of pet-friendly housing? There is no clear answer…just an increasingly sad problem.

Please share Rosie’s adoption information and if you are in the position to add a pet to your family, please adopt.

Rosie’s adoption information:

Animal ID 47845423
Species Dog
Breed Terrier, Pit Bull/Mix
Age 8 years 9 months 2 days
Gender Female
Size Large
Color White/Brown
Spayed/Neutered
Declawed No

Find the shelter’s Facebook page here.

Please note! All inquiries about this dog must be made directly to the shelter. Animal Victory is NOT the point of contact and has no affiliation with the animal welfare agency.

Starving Horses, Deprived Of Food And Water, Rescued In Texas

Atascosa, Texas – Two starving horses are finally receiving care after deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office responded to a tip about potential animal cruelty. According to the authorities, deputies and an Animal Cruelty Investigator responded to the location in the 10000 block of Silver Trail and observed two horses that appeared to be emaciated as they did not have any adequate food or water supply.

The “extremely thin” horses had resorted to eating bark from trees, and wood from their enclosure, in a desperate attempt to survive.

Deputies found a water bucket with algae and debris that the two horses were attempting to drink from.

The horses were seized and removed from the property; they were transported to a nearby veterinary office for further treatment and will be transported to Meadow Haven Horse Rescue and Sanctuary.

The situation remains under investigation.

Cases of potential animal cruelty in Bexar County can be reported at bcsotips@bexar.org.

Outrage Follows Shelter’s Killing Of Dog Who Was Being Held After Incident With Off-Leash Dog

Arlington, VA – There is widespread outrage following the early euthanasia of a dog named Marley who was being held at Humane Rescue Alliance. Marley’s troubles began when she was out for a walk with her foster, Rachel Manu.

According to Manu, a Yorkshire terrier got away from its owner and ran at them, barking. She explains what transpired to Fox 5 News:

“I bend down to grab the other dog’s leash to pull her away and that’s when Marley was able to get around me and grab the other dog. The poor baby just wants to be loved and I think she got into protective mode when that provocation occurred.”

While reaching into Marley’s mouth to separate the dogs, Manu was injured, and the small dog sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Marley was sent to the shelter for a 10-day bite quarantine. The shelter indicated that Marley could have killed the little dog and she would likely be euthanized, but people were fighting to give her a chance to live.

In fact, during the quarantine holding period, a trainer and a non-profit rescue agency were secured for Marley…but there would be no second chances for the maligned dog.

On Sunday, a day before her quarantine was to end, the shelter decided to kill her. People fighting for Marley’s life broke the news:

The shelter has stated that killing Marley was a “difficult decision” and that Marley was put down because she was believed to be a danger to the public.

Rest in peace Marley.

Cat Who Vanished In 2021 From Alabama Home Found In Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV – A cat who vanished from her home in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2021 has been found in Nevada. The mischievous cat, Raven, belongs to Tracy Cost, who has searched high and low for her pet since the day she vanished. Cost tells 8 News Now, “I went out every day searching for her. I thought I was never going to find her again.”

Imagine her surprise when Elizabeth McGloin, the woman who found Raven in North Las Vegas, let her know that Raven was alive, albeit nearly 2,000 miles from home. The distance between Nevada and Alabama made the prospect of a reunion daunting. McGloin said, “She is scared and wants to go home, I just don’t have the funds to get her there,”

Fortunately, people who watched the 8 News Now broadcast reached out to a non-profit organization that transports cats cross country. Teresa Dechert, with Imagine Home, received nearly a dozen messages from people who saw the news segment and now the agency is coordinating Raven’s journey home.

Thanks to kind people who have made donations, Raven will get to fly home, rather than endure a lengthy journey on the road. Raven is expected to embark on her trek home in early March.

As to how the cat wound up in Nevada…there are suspicions that she crawled into the engine compartment of a vehicle and miraculously survived the long journey. It was her embedded microchip that allowed McGloin to find her true owner.

Safe travels home Raven!

Family’s Elderly Dog Run Over And Killed By Amazon Delivery Driver

Calvert County, Maryland – A Maryland family’s elderly dog was killed in their own driveway when an Amazon driver ran her over and left without even telling them about her death. As reported by NBC Washington, the tragic incident happened last Tuesday when an Amazon delivery driver ran over 15-year-old Starr, a Weimaraner, with a delivery van.

Starr’s owner, Danielle Von Oehsen, said that “she was like one of our children.”

Her husband Harry describes what home surveillance captured on video, “You can see the guy driving over her, or reversing over her and then coming back onto her again.”

When the family tried to find Starr, they discovered that she was grievously injured and barely clinging to life. She passed away shortly thereafter. Harry said, “I was trying to keep her alive patting her, calming her down, and then I brought her in the garage trying to get her to be OK, and then she just died.”

Amazingly, the family says that Amazon offered them a windchime and a $5 credit upon learning of Starr’s death.

The incident has been reported to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and an investigation is underway.

Shelter Withholds Judgment For Whoever Abandoned Dog Outside Of Grocery Store

Pierce County, WA – A Tacoma animal shelter has chosen kindness over condemnation after a dog was abandoned outside of an area grocery store. A good Samaritan found the German shepherd mix tied up outside of a grocery store last week and the dog was taken to the Humane Society for Tacoma/Pierce County.

After the dog was taken in, the shelter staff reached out to the public with the hope of reaching whoever abandoned the dog:

To this beautiful dog’s pet guardian:

We want to let you know that he is safe and being cared for by our dedicated staff. We know you left him somewhere where he would be found quickly and made sure he was secured so he wouldn’t be in danger and wandering the streets.

The agency did not pass judgment on the dog’s owner – letting the person know that they understand:

We know this decision was not an easy one to make and we are sorry you had to make it. Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is never easy. We’re not sure what unfortunate circumstances you were navigating, just know that he is in good hands.

With a special note to the community:

We are here to help. We never want anyone in our community to feel that this is their only option. We have several resources to help people and their pets stay together when possible. Our Pet Food Pantry is available to community members in need and we have a spay & neuter assistance program for those that qualify. Our Pet Support Team is here to provide rehoming resources and counseling for pet guardians working through tough issues with their pets or unfortunate situations.

Cat Miraculously Survives 12 Days Alone Inside House Ravaged By Fire

Nesconset, NY – A cat named Ernie miraculously survived 12 days alone inside a house that was ravaged by fire. As reported by News 12, the 10-year-old cat had somehow survived without food or water for nearly two weeks before his owner, Debbie Robinson, discovered that he was still alive.

The family lost four other pets in the devastating blaze and nobody knew that Ernie was still alive until the day that Robinson went to the burned-out residence and heard a faint meow.

She tells the news agency:

“Amazing that we were there, at that moment, that we went in the house, and he was strong enough with his lungs to cry,”

Robinson reached out for help to rescue the cat from the house and Frankie Floridia, of Strong Island Animal Rescue immediately stepped up to help. Floridia was able to locate Ernie in the house and he was rushed to a veterinarian for an exam. Despite nearly two weeks without food or water, and surviving a deadly fire, he is expected to make a full recovery.

A fundraiser to help the family get through this difficult time has been established. Click here to find the GoFundMe.

Dog Survives Being Beaten, Legs Bound, And Thrown In Trash

Charlotte, NC – A dog is alive and receiving care after someone subjected him to abhorrent cruelty. A good Samaritan found the dog, dubbed Joey, in a dumpster in Charlotte – his legs were bound behind him and he was left to die.

According to Forgotten, Now Family Rescue, Joey had also been beaten, leaving him with “countless fractures.” The rescue agency says that Joey has been abused for a long time, writing:

The heart breaking news is these fractures are all over his body and in various healing stages. This abuse was not just once. It was repeated his entire life. Joey has holes in his head Not from bite wounds but from jagged edges or debris on what was used to hit him. The blows to His skull were with such force he is blind in one eye.

Despite the abuse, Joey has maintained a sweet and forgiving nature. The agency writes:

I have saved a lot of dogs but never have I met such a thankful dog. I sat with Joey at the hospital. He cried in pain but always followed it with licking my hand. I couldn’t grasp how how he has been so horrifically failed yet still loves anyway. Every single day those of us fortunate to know him personally are in awe.

The rescue organization knows that someone out there KNOWS this dog and/or who did this to him and they are offering a $2,000 reward for the information that will lead the authorities to an arrest. If you know something, please email the rescue group at: Forgottennowfamily@gmail.com

Zoo Mourns Death Of African Lioness, Sukari

San Francisco, CA – Staff at the San Francisco Zoo is mourning the loss of an African lioness named Sukari. According to the zoo, the 20-year-old lion died from splenic lymphoma.

In a social media post, the zoo described Sukari as “stoic,” but stated that she would “melt your heart” after you got to know her. The zoo outlined her favorite things and commended her for being an incredible ambassador:

Sukari loved horse shanks, pork loin and goat’s milk and loved to play soccer with her indestructible boomer balls, playing in the habitat’s moated area and slamming the balls against the walls. She was an incredible ambassador who helped educate our guests on the importance of lion conservation and her legacy will live on here at #SFZoo with son, Jasiri. She will be missed.

Sukari was born in 2002 and came to live at the San Francisco Zoo in 2009. She had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for her cancer since October.

Rest in peace Sukari.

Family Lost Home And Dad Chose To Sleep On Street Because Pet Rabbit Wasn’t Allowed At Shelter

Georgia – A devoted father recently revealed his exceptionally good heart when he opted to sleep on the street with his family’s pet rabbit, rather than giving up the animal who was considered to be part of the family. Prepare to read one of the most heartwarming stories you have encountered this year…

The man’s name is Cory Coleman, and he lost his job in December; shortly thereafter, his family lost their home. Coleman’s wife and children were able to get into a homeless shelter, but the facility would not allow their pet rabbit, Goldie, to stay with them.

Rather than getting rid of their pet, Coleman opted to sleep on park benches, even when it was freezing outside, reports 11 Alive News. Coleman explained in the simplest of ways, telling the news agency, “I was not going to let her get away that easy, not this rabbit.”

Adding a statement that true animal lovers will appreciate:

“A father will go to these lengths to keep his family together. Animals are a part of that family.”

When the temperature dropped to a dangerous level, Coleman tried to get into a warming shelter with Goldie. Gregory White, the director of the Decatur Recreation Center, recounts what he told the devoted pet owner when he saw the bunny, telling the news agency what he said.

“‘Cory, I don’t think the rabbit can go to the warming center.'”

But White could see that Coleman was devoted to his pet, and that dedication prompted him to take Goldie home, and allow Coleman to go to the warming center. White was determined to find a solution so he began searching for rabbit rescues to assist. He found the Georgia House Rabbit Society and they agreed to take Goldie in until her family could get back on their feet.

Ultimately, the goal is to have this loving family in a home of their own, with their beloved pet, Goldie. A fundraiser has been established to help make that possible. You can find the GoFundMe account here.

Officer Assists Homeless Woman Who Wants A Better Life For Her Dog

Dupage County, IL – A dog is beginning a new life thanks to his homeless owner, who wanted him to have a better life. The dog, named Pluto, is now with the DuPage County Animal Services facility because his former owner reached out for help.

A police officer called last night to ask if someone could stay late as they drove a homeless person and her dog to the shelter. The pet owner said she wanted a better life for Pluto. Living outside and moving from place to place has been hard on both of them.

Expressing gratitude to the police officer who helped the woman and her dog escape the bitter cold, “Thank you to the officer that drove her to us and then was trying to get her into a shelter.”

Emaciated Alligator Pulled From Brooklyn Lake Is Too Weak To Eat Food

Bronx, NY – An emaciated alligator, pulled from a park lake in Brooklyn earlier this week, is reportedly too weak to eat food. According to the Bronx Zoo, the gaunt gator weighs a mere 15 pounds and she is receiving nourishment via tube feeding.

The five-to-six-year-old alligator, dubbed Godzilla, ingested a large bathtub stopper at some point, but it cannot be surgically removed until she is stronger. In a statement, the zoo said, “We will continue to provide supportive care for her and determine the next steps based on how she responds to treatment.”

Godzilla was rescued from Prospect Park Lake after a New York City Parks Department maintenance worker spotted her. Officials believe that someone abandoned Godzilla in the lake when she because too large to keep as a “pet,” which is illegal in New York City.

A healthy alligator of Godzilla’s age should weight between 30 and 35 pounds.

Shelter Takes In Badly Neglected Dog After An ‘Urgent Call For Help’ Was Received For A Dog Lying On Side Of Road

Iowa – A badly neglected dog is receiving life-saving care after being taken in by an Iowa animal shelter. The senior dog, dubbed Murphy, was picked up by animal services, who received an “urgent” call for help after a dog was observed lying on the side of the road.

On February 21, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa said:

Murphy was soaking wet, his fur completely matted and pulling at his skin when an ARL Animal Services officer responded to an urgent call to help a dog found lying on the side of the road.

We could tell Murphy was a very old dog and had been suffering for a very long time.

An exam by the shelter’s medical team revealed the extent of Murphy’s suffering.

The veterinary team trimmed away Murphy’s matted, dirty fur, and his emaciated body was revealed. They could see that his nails were overgrown, teeth were missing, and he had advanced dental disease that had created holes between his mouth and his sinuses.

Murphy is free from his painfully matted fur, his nails have been trimmed, he has been bathed and he is warm, clean, and well-fed. Nobody knows how much time he has left, but he is safe and will be cared for as long as he is alive.

Donations are accepted at this link to the shelter’s website.
