Sagadahoc County, Maine – Over the weekend, the Sagadahoc County Communications Center received a report of a dog laying in the road in the town of Arrowsic. Deputy Mark Anderson responded to the call and began searching the area for the dog.
The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office said:
After checking nearby ditches, he located a very cold, female dog, appearing almost frozen to death. There were claw marks where she had attempted to climb out of the ditch before her paw got too cold.
When Deputy Anderson approached, the elderly dog held up her paw and “whimpered heavily” in an apparent plea for help. Deputy Anderson picked up the dog and placed her into his patrol vehicle for transport to the dispatch center in Bath.
The senior dog was met with kindness by the staff. The sheriff’s agency said:
The on-duty dispatchers immediately provided care. She was bundled up in blankets and a portable heater was used to help warm her up. They fixed her a plate of food and once she warmed up and stopped shivering, she ate the plate clean.
Deputy Anderson was determined to find the dog’s owner. The sheriff’s office said:
Deputy Anderson went to work making some lost dog flyers and returned to the area and began knocking on doors in an attempt to locate the owner. It wasn’t long and he figured out who the owner was. He learned the dog was at least 14 years old and was let outside around 9 PM the previous evening.
Deputy Anderson learned that the dog’s owner, an elderly female, had stayed up all night waiting for her pet to return home. The dog was eventually reunited with the woman.
Those involved in the rescue effort were commended:
A huge shout out to Communications Specialist Shaun and Dori, as well as Deputy Anderson, for providing extraordinary care for this animal. The efforts of these three Sagadahoc County employees, without a doubt, saved the life of this precious pet.
Kudos to you!
