Memphis, Tennessee – According to Memphis authorities, 30-year-old Isaiah Bethany, an employee of Memphis Animal Services, is facing animal cruelty charges after officials found “terrible” conditions and numerous neglected dogs and puppies at his South Memphis home.

Last Friday, investigators went to Bethany’s East Gage home to serve a narcotics search warrant for another resident at the house. While there, they discovered horrific conditions, including nine puppies in a pen filled with feces, multiple chained dogs outside, and several dogs inside and outside the residence without access to food or water.

The authorities found numerous troubling issues at Bethany’s residence, including a lack of dog food, no access to water, filthy cages, and signs of potential dog fighting, including dogs tethered to heavy, short chains, and hanging tethers from various objects in the yard, and syringes, dog medications and an ear-cutting kit.

A woman who dated Bethany claimed he is a backyard breeder and said, “There are dogs buried in the backyard.” Telling WREG News, “Dogs would go without food and water. The dogs are always chained up outside, even during the last snowstorm.”

Bethany’s employer said:

“The City of Memphis has zero tolerance for animal cruelty. The allegations involving one employee do not reflect the mission or values of Memphis Animal Services nor the employees who work every day to protect the animals and residents of our community. “

It is unconscionable that a public employee for an animal welfare organization would be implicated in animal cruelty allegations, including possible dog fighting and backyard breeding. If true, this is a complete betrayal of the public’s trust.

Why This Petition Matters

The irony is impossible to ignore. Isaiah Bethany worked for an organization charged with rescuing abused animals and investigating cruelty cases. Yet police allege that the very conduct he was expected to help prevent was taking place under his own roof. According to the authorities, Bethany’s own dogs suffered abuse and neglect and were living in conditions no animal should ever endure. Bethany’s conduct is a betrayal of public trust and the allegations against him must be treated with the seriousness they deserve.
