Las Vegas, Nevada – On April 12, a cat named Rita lost her life in a shocking and cruel manner inside a townhouse garage in Las Vegas. According to the authorities, Joshua Booth drowned his neighbor’s cat in a tub of water in his garage and then threw her body onto the street.

AT A GLANCE

  • On April 12, a cat named Rita was drowned in a tub inside a Las Vegas townhouse garage.
  • Rita’s owner told the police Joshua Booth had threatened to kill her cats.
  • Police arrested Joshua Booth, charging him with willfully/maliciously torturing, maiming, or mutilating an animal for companionship or pleasure, causing death, and willfully or maliciously torturing, maiming, or mutilating an animal kept for companionship or pleasure.
  • Another cat, terrified and soaking wet, was found by the police in Booth’s garage.
  • Booth is due in court on May 14.

Below is the full account of this disturbing incident:

Rita’s owner contacted authorities after she was unable to find her cats and reported that her neighbor had threatened to kill them. According to police, Booth used a garden hose to fill a tub in his garage, drowned Rita, and then threw her body onto the street. A second cat, wet, terrified, but still alive, was found in Booth’s garage when officers executed a search warrant at his residence near Pecos Road and Harmon Avenue.
Booth denies wrongdoing, claiming he killed the cat in “self-defense” and bizarrely asserting that Rita “spontaneously drowned.” Officers noted scratches on Booth’s arms, stating they may have been caused by the cat fighting for her life as he held her underwater.
Illustrative Image (not actually Rita)
The terror Rita endured in her final moments is unimaginable. Her surviving companion narrowly escaped the same fate. This was not an accident. This was a deliberate, premeditated act of cruelty carried out by a man who had already threatened to do exactly this. If you are outraged, please add your name to this petition today. Your signature is a demand for meaningful consequences. This case cannot be quietly dismissed.

Why This Petition Matters

Joshua Booth must be held fully accountable for taking his neighbor’s cats and cruelly drowning one of them in a tub of water and attempting to drown another. We demand that he face the maximum penalty allowed by law for the charges stemming from this incident. We further demand that he be prohibited from owning or living with animals in the future.

Petition target: District Attorney Steven B. Wolfson, Clark County, Nevada, who has the authority to pursue the maximum sentence under Reba’s Law.

The Charges Booth faces two counts under Nevada law:
  1. Willfully or maliciously torturing, maiming, or mutilating an animal kept for companionship or pleasure, causing death.
  2. Willfully or maliciously torturing, maiming, or mutilating an animal kept for companionship or pleasure.
Both are felony charges under Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 574.
Under Nevada law, felony animal cruelty carries a sentence of one to six years in prison and a fine of up to ten thousand dollars. These penalties were strengthened by Reba’s Law, passed in Nevada in 2025, which increased enforcement and penalties for the most serious animal cruelty cases. Booth posted bail following his arrest. He is scheduled to return to court on May 14, 2026.
This was intentional cruelty, and the consequences must reflect that.  What Joshua Booth did was evil, and his behavior cannot be excused or dismissed.
Please Note: The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department declined our formal request for a copy of the Incident and Arrest Report pertaining to Joshua Booth. Their response is included below.
“In this case, after a careful examination of all factors, law enforcement’s interest in nondisclosure clearly outweighs the public’s presumed interest in access. Therefore, the records you seek are confidential, at least at this time, and must be withheld. As the investigation proceeds, it is anticipated that records will become more available, and we therefore encourage you to submit a new request in the future.”

32Anonymous As a veterinarian trained in animal cruelty investigations, I urge District Attorney Steven B. Wolfson to prosecute Joshua Booth the fullest extent of the law and allow no opportunity to plead down the charges. A felony conviction with the maximum sentence under Reba’s Law is absolutely essential to protect both the public and pets. Joshua Booth clearly has threatened others, has sociopathic tendencies, and has cruelly acted on them causing the death of a beloved cat in a horrific manner and causing psychological harm to her owner by cruelly throwing the cat that he drowned into the street. It is clear that, without incarceration, he will threaten and act on his threats and go on to commit more acts of violence towards others, including intimidate partners, children, and other vulnerable individuals. The next time he comes before a judge, it may be a child that he has drowned. 0 May 05, 2026
