Henrico County, Virginia : Authorities say a man intentionally injured cats, filmed their suffering, and used the videos to solicit donations by falsely claiming the animals had cancer.

Police identified Rodney Travis Jr., also known online as “Debbie Crankin,” as the individual accused of operating the disturbing social media fraud scheme.

WHAT POLICE ALLEGE HAPPENED

• Cats were intentionally injured
• Videos of their suffering were posted online
• Viewers were told the cats had cancer
• Fake or misleading veterinary bills were shared (one exceeding $35,000)
• Compassionate donors were pressured to send money

Videos showed cats bleeding from the mouth and nose, struggling to walk, and gasping for air.

VETERINARY FINDINGS

A veterinarian reviewing the videos reported signs consistent with:

• Head trauma
• Broken jaw
• Respiratory distress
• Possible drug influence

One rescued kitten was later found to have:

• Fractured skull
• Multiple broken ribs
• Healing spinal fracture

HOW THE SCAM WORKED

This was not a rescue effort.

Authorities allege the injuries were inflicted and then used to manipulate donors.

Emotional captions were designed to make viewers feel guilty if they didn’t donate. People believed they were saving dying cats. Instead, police say the suffering was used to generate money.

INVESTIGATORS SAY THIS WAS A SOPHISTICATED ONLINE FUNDRAISING OPERATION

Public reporting indicates Travis previously raised approximately $368,000 through a GoFundMe campaign related to gender transition expenses, demonstrating significant experience in online fundraising and social media promotion.

Authorities now allege he used similar online tactics to solicit donations through the suffering of injured cats.

WHAT INVESTIGATORS FOUND

• Videos filmed in Henrico County hotel rooms
• Blood evidence and large amounts of cat hair
• Multiple injured cats in his possession

Police seized eight cats. They are now receiving veterinary care.

FINAL VICTORY UPDATE: Rodney Travis Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Torturing Cats in Fraud Scheme. A major victory for the cats harmed in a horrific animal cruelty and fraud case in Henrico County, Virginia.

Animal Victory presented the petition to prosecuting attorney Dylan McAuley, the number one animal prosecuting attorney in Virginia. Rodney Travis Jr. has been sentenced to 15 years of active imprisonment after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the abuse of cats that prosecutors say he used to solicit fraudulent donations online.

Animal Victory has received the official Disposition Sheet. The court records confirm that Travis was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with all sentences ordered to run consecutively.

Travis pleaded guilty to 10 charges in Henrico County: six felony counts of animal cruelty, one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty, and three felony counts of computer fraud to obtain money by false pretenses.

His sentence includes:

• 15 years of active imprisonment
• $25,000 in fines
• Five years of supervised probation following his release from prison
• A lifetime prohibition on purchasing, owning, possessing, transporting or having intentional contact with animals
• A prohibition on entering animal shelters, pet stores, veterinary offices and animal rescues
• A prohibition on entering any hotel, motel, Airbnb or VRBO property located within Henrico County

The lifetime animal prohibition is especially significant, ensuring that Travis cannot legally acquire or possess animals after serving his prison sentence.

Dylan McAuly has told us the 15-year sentence has been described by the Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office as the longest animal cruelty sentence ever imposed in Virginia.

Update 9/19/2026: The prosecuting attorney informed us today that Mr. Travis is expected to plead guilty to many cruelty charges on Wednesday, September 23 at 1:30pm in Henrico Circuit Court. We will publish the outcome asap.

Update 5/5/2026: Rodney Travis has been indicted and now faces a total of 19 charges across both General District Court and Circuit Court. His charges include felony torture of a cat, multiple counts of animal cruelty, providing false information to a criminal investigator, conspiracy to commit fraud, and multiple counts of obtaining money under false pretenses. A jury trial has been scheduled for November 30 through December 11, 2026. A preliminary hearing on the fraud and bond violation charges is set for June 11, 2026. This case is moving forward and your signatures are making a difference.

Update 3/30/2026: The case against Rodney Travis, Jr. is moving forward. Travis remains in custody at the Henrico County, Virginia jail and has not been released on bond.

A key hearing is scheduled for May 4, 2026. On that date, a Grand Jury will review the evidence to determine whether there is probable cause to formally indict him on felony charges. If indicted, the case will move from General District Court to Circuit Court for trial.

This Grand Jury process takes place before trial and is required in felony cases to ensure there is sufficient evidence to proceed. Looking ahead, multiple jury trial dates have already been set, beginning November 30, 2026, and continuing through December 11, 2026.
