Las Vegas, Nevada — Peachy was 27 years old. For nearly three decades, the Chilean flamingo lived safely inside the wildlife habitat at the Flamingo Hotel & Casino. That ended on March 3 when Mitchell Fairbarn, 33, of Ontario, Canada, climbed into the enclosure, chased the birds, injured several of them, and carried Peachy back to his hotel room.

What happened next was not a drunken mistake. It was torture.

Hotel security was alerted to the situation, and they detained Fairbarn until officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrived to make an arrest. Police found blood and feathers in Fairbarn’s room, and after reviewing photos and surveillance video footage, they say Peachy was “choked” and “thrown to the ground” repeatedly by the Canadian tourist.

This was not a drunken prank. This was calculated cruelty against a defenseless animal.

The local authorities are taking this animal cruelty case seriously. Fairbarn is facing multiple felony charges. According to court and jail records, he faces four counts of torturing, maiming, or killing an animal kept for companionship or pleasure. Four felony charges.
