Sign: Beloved Community Dog “Orelha” Killed in Brazil, Sparking National Outrage

Florianópolis, Brazil – The brutal killing of a beloved street dog named Orelha has sparked widespread protests in Brazil. The 10-year-old mixed breed dog was viciously attacked in the early morning hours of January 4 in Florianópolis. He was found and humanely euthanized a day later. The attack was allegedly witnessed by dozens of people who saw at least four teenagers inflict devastating injuries on the friendly dog.

The unprovoked attack of the senior community dog has shaken the local community, and the outrage has spread across the nation and around the world. Online, the hashtag #JustiçaPorOrelha, has gone viral and thousands of people have participated in organized protests on behalf of the slain dog who was adored by locals and tourists alike.

Police have confirmed that four teenagers have been investigated and at least three adults are accused of intimidating witnesses and interfering with the investigation. Authorities analyzed over 1,000 hours of surveillance video and interviewed more than 20 individuals during their investigation. Based on that extensive review, police determined that one teenager was directly involved in the attack that resulted in Orelha’s death. One teen (unnamed) in particular is being investigated for Orelha’s actual killing. According to the authorities, the teen left the country and stayed abroad for an extended period of time.

The teenager traveled outside Brazil on the same day that the Civil Police learned who the suspects in the case were and stayed abroad until January 29. On his return, he was intercepted by the police when he arrived at the airport.

Because the case is being handled under juvenile protection laws, identifying details, including the teenager’s name and age, will remain confidential as the legal process moves forward.

Note: There are unconfirmed reports that a board with a nail in it was used to hit Orelha in the head and that an object was shoved into the rectum. The brutality of this crime is beyond comprehension.

On March 6, Animal Victory was in direct communication with the Ouvidoria do Ministério Público de Santa Catarina regarding Orelha’s case. Officials confirmed they have received our petition and that the investigation is active and being handled by multiple prosecutorial offices.
