San Bernardino, CA – California Fish and Wildlife is currently investigating a horrific case of animal cruelty involving two dogs who were encouraged to rip apart a young coyote near San Bernardino, California. The disturbing situation was brought to light by Jonas Black, a dog trainer and social media influencer who uses his platform to advocate for animals.

Black posted a video of the sadistic incident, which shows two dogs tearing apart a young coyote. The helpless animal is unable to fight back as the dogs rip chunks of his body away. It is a torturous video to watch; so awful that we have decided not to post it directly in this petition.

Black comments on the vicious attack, outlining the blatant cruelty this innocent animal suffered through:

Let’s be crystal clear. Torturing an animal is never justified. I do not care if it is a coyote, a raccoon, a bobcat, or a stray dog. I do not care if it wandered onto your property. I do not care if you think it needs to be culled. If you are going to kill an animal, kill it quick and end it fast. Leaving an animal suffering is cowardly, cruel, and inexcusable. It is not wildlife management. It is not ranching. It is not hunting. It is torture.

The video was allegedly posted to Instagram by the perpetrator, identified as Oscar Gomez, who has since shut down his account after a tidal wave of backlash.

Note: Coyotes, often called “song dogs” for their remarkable vocalizations, are highly intelligent and adaptable animals. They live in close-knit family groups, communicate with a wide range of sounds, and even demonstrate problem-solving skills comparable to domestic dogs. Like all sentient beings, they experience fear and pain. Being wild is not a justification for sadism; no animal deserves to be tormented. Respect for wildlife means recognizing that intelligence, family bonds, and the capacity to feel pain are not limited to humans or pets.

WHY THIS PETITION MATTERS: 

We, the undersigned, demand that Oscar Gomez be held responsible for encouraging his dogs to tear apart an innocent coyote in a prolonged and vicious attack. It is our collective demand that this man face the maximum sentence for the charges stemming from this deliberate, horrific abuse. Laws must recognize the actual seriousness of animal abuse and ensure that those who commit these cruel acts are held fully accountable.

Research has consistently shown a strong link between animal cruelty and human violence. Individuals who commit such heinous acts against animals often pose a threat to society as a whole, as animal abuse is frequently a precursor to other violent crimes. Failing to hold this man accountable not only denies justice to the innocent coyote who was subjected to unimaginable suffering but also endangers the community at large. We must send a clear message that such cruelty will not be tolerated.
