Kentucky Derby Contender Euthanized After Suffering Leg Injury During Training

Published: April 28, 2023 at 04:31 PM Author: Penny Eims

Louisville, KY – A three-year-old Kentucky Derby contender was euthanized yesterday after suffering a leg injury during an early morning training run at Churchill Downs. According to multiple sources, Wild on Ice hurt his hind leg during the run and after being evaluated by veterinary professionals, he was euthanized.

The horse’s owner, Frank Sumpter, tells the El Paso Times:

“Wild On Ice gave us so many great moments. He’ll forever be remembered. It’s a sad situation. My heart goes out to the team, trainer Joel Marr and everyone who helped us get to this point. These horses give us so many great moments in life and our team puts in so many hours taking care of the horses. He had a fracture in his hind leg and it was determined he couldn’t be saved. Wild On Ice had so much heart.”

As reported by Bloodhorse, Wild on Ice fractured a bone in his left hock. Sumpter told the publication:

“I did not want my horse to be in pain. He was with the best vets in the country and they said it was in a seriously bad spot. I knew one day he would not be able to get up and be in so much pain. I know how God works, and I am already so blessed, me and my family. The Lord is a rewarder, so I know God has something special for us and it will be here in his time.”

Rest easy Wild on Ice.

Horse racing, even show horses and dog racing is a tragic end to beautiful horses, but makes money for the owner!!! If they don’t make money, something happens to them, they are killed or just thrown away!! I have read several times where the dogs that race are not cared for at all!! If they get hurt, they stay that way!! ALL of it should be BANNED!!!

Apparently nothing can save these poor horses, obviously owners, trainers, the tracks and all of the patrons that attend these venues like to see horses die.

WHY did you really put this horse down, because he couldn’t or wouldn’t ever be able to make you any more money??? I’ll bet that was what it was!! A 3 yr. old and you put the horse down, SHAME ON YOU!!!!! What happened to helping a horse with a leg injury, didn’t say it was broken, just injured?? WHAT did the doctor say was wrong with the leg?? OR did you have a doctor see the horse?? You couldn’t afford for this horse to be on your property?? WHAT was the REAL reason??? THAT horse could have lived a long life even though it had an injured leg, as a horse you could ride at home, or maybe sell to someone and be truthful to them about the leg!!

It did say it was broken and the location. Horses have to stand for their health they can’t lay down for long periods of time. Due to their size and weight broken bones often can’t heal and are extremely painful. Some of them can’t be ridden again even for pleasure

i am sure if this horse was never going to race again his life could have been saved. unfortunately it is easier to kill him than it would be to support an animal for the rest of it’s life especially since he can’t generate any more money for greedy rich people. it has nothing to do with the love of the animal. at 3 years old that horse could have led a normal horse life just not a race horse life. shame on the vets who look at these animals as a means to make money and when they can’t do that kill them rather than let them live a kinder life on a farm or sanctuary. sad but it will continue to happen if people don’t change it but i doubt that, when so much money is involved.
