Woman Arrested For Abandoning Crated Puppy In Intersection

Preble County, OH – A woman has been arrested for abandoning a malnourished beagle puppy in an intersection in Preble County. According to a news release from the Preble County Sheriff’s Office, a call was received on December 27 about an abandoned beagle pup, in a plastic crate, at the intersection of Verona Road and Sonora Road.

The news release describes how deputies found the pup:

Deputies located the crate, sitting on its top, with the dog inside. On this particular day, it was 25 degrees outside.

Deputies could see that the pup was weak and “could barely move.” The deputies rushed the puppy to an emergency veterinarian where an exam revealed: “that the dog was approximately 22 weeks old and was found to be malnourished, very thin, suffered from decreased muscle loss, and was dehydrated.”

The investigation led to the arrest of Kayla Rae Brown, age 26, of Lewisburg, Ohio. She was arrested on January 30th at her residence. She is charged with the following crimes in Eaton Municipal Court:
Cruelty To Animals, a 5th-degree felony
Cruelty To Animals, a 1st-degree misdemeanor
Cruelty to Animals, a 2nd-degree misdemeanor
Falsification, a 1st-degree misdemeanor

Brown appeared in Eaton Municipal Court on Tuesday; her bond has been set at $25,085.00 cash.

There are unconfirmed reports that Kayla Brown has ties with a rescue group.

Three Bears Died From The Cold While On Grounded Plane

This month, three sloth bears died from the cold while onboard an airplane grounded at Liège Airport in Belgium. The tragedy took place on the weekend of January 21 when the plane, belonging to a Qatari company, was grounded because of the frigid temperature and icy conditions.

According to multiple sources, there were nine bears onboard the plane that was traveling Peru and Qatar.

Walloon minister for animal welfare Celine Tellier told Bel-RTL radio, “We are going to look at what are the responsibilities and what sanctions should be taken in light of that.”

Sloth bears are considered to be “vulnerable” because of the degradation of their habitat.

Rescue Takes In Badly Burned Puppy, Abandoned In Miami

Miami, FL – An animal rescue group in Florida is doing its utmost to save the life of a four-week-old puppy who was abandoned in Miami. According to Mutty Paws Rescue, the pup has severe burns over much of his body.

On Friday, the animal welfare organization said:

This little 3 lb boy was found in Miami by warehouses and brought to MDAS as #a2340462 HE IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION & we are fighting for his life. He is 4 weeks old and his 4 weeks of life have been hell!

Describing with dismay, the pup’s critical condition:

His breathing is labored, his skin is sloughing off of him. SOMEONE TORTURED HIM. How anyone could do this to any animal, let alone a 3 lb baby is incomprehensible.

The puppy, dubbed Dade, received a blood transfusion and has survived with round-the-clock care. The most recent update from the rescue group states:

Dade update: he has survived another night after receiving an emergency blood transfusion late yesterday afternoon. His PCV went up to 27% from 13% following the transfusion and that will be repeated again shortly to make sure it’s holding. He is still considered critical condition and is not out of the woods by a long shot. He is still eating and drinking and receiving wound care multiple times a day as well as pain management. Yesterday’s emergency transfusion cost was an additional $1076.35

This Dirty Pile Of Fur Is A Dog Who Was Tied To A Pole And Abandoned

Baltimore County, Maryland – A dog was so badly neglected before being abandoned that he was nearly unrecognizable as a living creature. The pup, dubbed Marley, was tied to a pole and abandoned before being found by county animal control officials.

On January 27, the Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland said:

We will never know what happened the first part of Marley’s life, the part before he was found by County animal service officers. We won’t ever know if he was loved or cared for; whether he had a name, a home, a best friend.

Given Marley’s pitiful appearance, it seems that he never received care before he was found.  Beneath the layers of filth was a dog who had been hidden away for far too long…living in misery.

And a shocking secret was hidden beneath Marley’s matted fur…the circulation to one of his legs was cut off and it resulted in the loss of his limb.

But the real Marley has been revealed.

And now, life begins anew for this pup – gone is his filthy, matted fur, and gone are his days of being ignored and neglected. On Saturday, the animal welfare agency said:

Since his arrival here, Marley has learned to get along quite well without it and he runs and plays right alongside his other canine housemates!

Cat Returned For Being ‘Too Affectionate’ Has been Adopted To Someone Who Appreciates His Love

Montville, NJ – A loving cat who was adopted from the Montville Animal Shelter and then returned for being “too affectionate,” has found a new home, with people who appreciate his love. His name is Bruno, and fans of the shelter were shocked when they learned that his prior adopter returned him after just a week…

The original Facebook post explains:

The family never had a cat before and said he was too affectionate, always wanted to sit on their laps, follow them around, and head butt them for kisses and pets. He was also too playful and got zoomies in the evening!

Fortunately,  the so-called “velcro cat,” was adopted again after the shelter received a deluge of applications for him.

Cat ‘Safe And Comfortable’ After Being Abandoned In Bag Left By Garbage

Albany, NY –  A cat is “safe and comfortable” after being cruelly abandoned by garbage cans in Albany, New York. According to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, the cat, dubbed Newt, was discovered on Friday.

The animal welfare agency updated the public about Newt’s discovery, recounting the details:

Yesterday in Albany, a cat was found abandoned in a bag alongside trash cans on Sherman Street between Henry Johnson Blvd. and Park St. Albany Police Animal Control responded and brought the cat to safety at Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.

Happily, Newt is settling in well at the animal shelter. On Monday morning, the agency said:

Update! The cat found abandoned on Friday is safe, comfortable and doing well. We have named her Newt and she weighs about 6 lbs. She’s a little nervous in her new surroundings, but has a sweet temperament.

Information

The shelter is hoping to get information about whoever abandoned Newt.

Shelter Falls In Love With Sweet, Bonded Friends Taken In As Strays

Jackson County, Michigan – When a bonded cat and dog were brought to Michigan’s Jackson County Animal Shelter, it didn’t take staff long to fall in love. The dog, Sassy, was deeply bonded to her pal, Shadow – so much so that the friends would cry if separated from one another.

Lydia Sattler, the animal services director, tells People:

“The only time I saw them even remotely distressed is when they had their turns getting spayed and neutered. When the cat left, the dog sat at the door and cried. And then the same was true when the dog went; the cat stood at the door and cried. So even for that little time of being separated, they were so sad. They did not want to be away from each other.”

Earlier this week, the shelter created a Facebook post for the pair, hoping to find the perfect family to take them in:

Who can take this incredible, amazing pair home???

These traveling pair of best friends are now available for adoption!!! **TOGETHER ONLY**

Neglected Dog Recovering After Being Abandoned And ‘Cemented’ To Sidewalk

Boca Raton, FL – A badly neglected dog is getting a new lease on life after being rescued from a sidewalk in Boca Raton. According to a post by Tri-County Humane, the abandoned pooch was literally stuck to a sidewalk when he was found by a good Samaritan.

Four days ago, the animal welfare agency said:

He was cemented to the ground.
You read that right. Completely stuck to the sidewalk off Yamato Road for what seemed like days. He was left to die.
The smell was unbearable. There was no way a dog could have ended up like this overnight. How long was it going on? How long does he have? Did he get to us in time?

 

The dog, dubbed Trooper, was covered in urine and feces matted fur, had maggots crawling on his body, overgrown nails, and severe dental disease. An exam revealed a myriad of health issues, including worms, heart murmur, UTI, ear infections, enlarged prostate, and paralysis.

Good wishes, and donations, have been pouring in for Trooper. On Thursday, the animal welfare agency thanked Trooper’s supporters and let them know that he is showing signs of improvement:

Look who is starting to smile after all of your support!!! Trooper had the sillies this morning! Thank you to Blessing Blankets made with Love for keeping him warm between treatments and rehab! Thank you to everyone who has donated, emailed, sent positive thoughts and gave love to Trooper so far! His first smile is because of all of you!

Rescue Effort Goes Awry: More Than 50 Cats Surrendered To Shelter By Overwhelmed Person

Middletown, CT – A person who tried to help four pregnant cats during the start of the pandemic got overwhelmed when things did not go as planned. As reported by NBC Connecticut, the good Samaritan took in four homeless cats who were pregnant, but many veterinary hospitals closed or limited services available during the pandemic shutdowns, and the cats were not altered.

A Middletown animal control officer explained that it was:

“a rescue that went bad and became overwhelming due to the difficulties everyone was dealing with at the start of COVID.”

The person voluntarily surrendered 59 cats and has been “cooperative.” So far, Pieper Veterinary has altered 18 of the surrendered cats so they can be made available for adoption. The Connecticut Humane Society is helping to cover the cost of care and veterinary services for the remaining cats and will assist in getting rescue agencies to take them in.

Emaciated Dog, Abandoned At Park, Receives An Outpouring Of Love And Support

Franklin County, OH – An emaciated dog, abandoned at a park last week, has received an outpouring of support and love from those who have learned of her situation. On Wednesday, the Franklin County Dog Shelter recounted the situation, and the deluge of interest the pup has received since she was saved:

When they arrived on the scene to find 9-month-old Juniper suffering from severe neglect and extreme emaciation, Juniper was transported to the shelter where our staff rallied together and right away began providing Juniper with the lifesaving care that she was in need of.

Since her arrival, the Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center has received thousands of phone calls and messages in regard to Juniper.

Juniper has made progress, but the road to recovery is long. She has been transferred to one of the shelter’s rescue partners, Rescue Me Pawsome Style INC., to continue her journey.

Nobody knows who is responsible for letting Juniper become so emaciated, but she is safe now, and those caring for her will do their utmost to ensure that her next home is perfect.

Endangered Vulture Found Dead Under Unusual Circumstances: Zoo Offers $10,000 Reward For Information

Dallas, TX – On January 21, a 35-year-old endangered vulture named Pin was found dead in his enclosure at the Dallas Zoo, and his death is being called “suspicious.” Zoo officials are devastated over the loss of Pin, and they are hopeful that their offering of a $10,000 reward will bring them information about his death.

On January 22, the zoo stated:

The circumstances of the death are unusual, and the death does not appear to be from natural causes.

At a press conference this week, Dallas Zoo CEO Gregg Hudson offered few details about Pin’s death, only noting that he was wounded when he was first discovered in his enclosure. Hudson said:

“We’re going to continue to expand and implement whatever it takes for the safety and security measures of the animals, the staff and the people that live near the zoo.”

In a social media post, the zoo referred to Pin as a “remarkable boy and an extraordinary ambassador for his species.” The bird had been at the Dallas Zoo for 33 years, during which time he sired 11 offspring, including his first “grandkid,” in early 2020.

The zoo is mourning his death, writing:

Losing him is devastating not only to our Zoo family but also to the conservation efforts of this species. With only about 6,500 individuals of lappet-faced vultures left on Earth, they are now listed as endangered by the IUCN with a chance of moving to critically endangered.

Adding:

Pin will be missed dearly by everyone, especially those who were lucky enough to have taken care of him.

Workers Accidentally Tiled Cat Into Shower Enclosure

A curious cat named Winston found himself trapped behind a tile wall when workers accidentally sealed him inside, apparently unaware that he was there. The dramatic unsealing of the wall revealed Winston peering out from a hole made to access the area where he was stuck.

The moment was even more touching as the video uploaded to TikTok is set to Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.”

Suffice it to say, the rescue video reached “viral” status, with over six million views, and generated a deluge of comments, including those from people who had their own mischievous cats who crawled into spaces they should never have been.

Winston is doing well after his misadventure. According to his owner, he was in a separate room when the tile workers were fixing the enclosure, but they opened the door and he escaped…apparently right into the area where they were working.

Juvenile Grizzly Bears, Euthanized For Sickness, Tested Positive For Avian Flu

Helena, Montana – According to a news release from Montana’s Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Department, three juvenile grizzly bears who were euthanized after displaying signs of severe sickness tested positive for pathogenic avian flu (HPAI). According to the state agency, the bears “were observed to be in poor condition and exhibited disorientation and partial blindness, among other neurological issues.”

FWP Wildlife Veterinarian Jennifer Ramsey explains how experts believe the bears were infected:

“We suspect these mammals probably get the virus from consuming infected birds.”

Other animals, including a coyote, black bear, raccoons, skunk and a fox, have also tested positive for HPAI.

The avian influenza occurs naturally in birds and is categorized by its severity and transmission. A low pathogenic virus causes only minor symptons, but a highly pathogenic influenza (HPAI) is often fatal to both domestic and wild birds, and it is highly infectious.

According to the CDC, humans are at low risk of contracting the avian flu, but the agency recommends that people avoid sick or deceased wild animals, and wear gloves if an animal must be handled for disposal.

FWP staff would like to know about unusual or unexplained cases of sickness and/or death of wild birds and animals by calling their local wildlife biologist or the wildlife lab in Bozeman at 406-577-7880 or 406-577-7882.

Teen Died Trying To Save Her Beloved Dogs In Devastating House Fire

Berlin Heights, Ohio – A devoted teenager in Ohio died on Sunday morning while trying to save her beloved dogs from a devastating house fire. As reported by Cleveland 19 News, 15-year-old Rhianne King ran directly into harm’s way in an effort to save her dogs from the blaze.

Kaelyn Wells, Rhianne’s older sister, told the news agency:

“She was trying to get the dog and the smoke got to her because, by the time my sister left her room, the smoke had already engulfed the entire living room. It just shows that she was selfless and would rather risk her life to save those puppies than try to save herself.”

Two puppies, a ferret, and a bearded dragon also perished in the blaze. But Rhianne’s family credits her for saving one of the family’s puppies, who suffered burns on her face and paws.

The family believes that the fire started because of an electrical problem.

Shelter Wins Custody Of Cats And Dogs Rescued From Shed And Chained In Deplorable Conditions

Houston, Texas – Custody for 26 cats and dogs rescued from deplorable conditions at a residence in South Houston, on January 5, has been awarded to the Houston SPCA. The animal welfare agency had removed 11 emaciated dogs, seven cats, and eight puppies from “horrific” conditions.

In a news release, Houston SPCA described the appalling conditions the animals had been living in, writing:

Officials at the scene said in addition to the emaciated animals suffering from no food or water, some were urine-soaked, tethered by chains or tied to dirty wire crates, and suffering from varying medical issues.

Six cats and one dog were found inside the small shed. Another six dogs were chained to various items on the property while eight more were inside the garage. Four additional dogs and one cat were in the home in deplorable living conditions.

The owner was served with an exigent warrant that allowed the Houston SPCA to immediately rescue the animals and bring them into their care.

The owner, who has not been publicly identified, faces two years in prison and a $10,000 fine for animal cruelty.

Animal Victory is grateful to see these animals removed from their owner and the inhumane conditions they were forced to exist in.

Shelter’s Adoption Post For ‘Fire-Breathing Demon’ Goes Viral

Niagara, New York – A New York animal shelter’s Facebook post for a “fire-breathing demon” dog named Ralphie has gone viral. The Niagara SPCA’s brutally honest post warns of Ralphie’s deceptive appearance:

Meet Ralphie. At first glance, he’s an adorable highly sought after, young dog. People should be banging down our doors for him. We promise you, that won’t be the case. Ralphie is a terror in a somewhat small package.

What could go wrong with a 26 lb dog, right? We’re sure you’re thinking: my ankles will be just fine. We’d caution- proceed at your own risk.

The shelter suspects that Ralphie’s adorable face helped him get away with things that he should never have been allowed to do…the result? A fire-breathing demon.

The shelter writes:

He’s a whole jerk- not even half. Everything belongs to him. If you dare test his ability to possess THE things, wrath will ensue. If you show a moment of weakness, prepare to be exploited. Sounds fun, huh?

Describing his “perfect” home:

The ideal home for Ralphie is the Mother of Dragons, or an adult home free of other animals, with an owner who will lead him calmly and sternly- putting up with zero crap. On the bright side, Ralphie’s previous trainer will provide his new adopters with the training tools they believe he needs to be successful in a home.
