Two circus tigers are dead in China after escaping from their enclosure and fatally mauling a zoo keeper at Danjiang Peacock Valley . The tigers, who were on loan to a tourist attraction near the city of Nanyang, attacked the man during feeding time days ago. According to sources, staff and guests were evacuated from the area and the authorities attempted to tranquilize and capture the big cats, but ultimately deadly force was used instead.

According to MSN News, the circus tigers had been rented out for a performance at Henan Park, despite a ban on using tigers for such events. The park has been ordered to suspend its business while the situation is investigated.

Lonesome Macaw Visits Parrots Daily At Rio Zoo

A lonesome macaw visits captive parrots at zoo in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, every morning. The daily trek has been happening for decades, and experts believe that the bird, dubbed Juliet, misses having companionship in the wild. Zoo visitors have observed Juliet nuzzling the captive parrots through netting, and grooming them as well.

Sadly, experts believe that Juliet is the last bird of her kind in the wild. Many years ago, blue-and-yellow macaws were abundant in the city, but one has not been seen in the wild, aside from Juliet, since 1818.

According to the Phys.org, plans are in the works to start a breeding program and reintroduce parrots into the Tijuca Forest National Park near the end of 2022.

Dog Embarks On New Life After Suffering With Metal Pipe On His Head For Weeks

A year-old dog named Cletus has a new lease on life after being rescued from an unfortunate, and perhaps deadly, situation. The unlucky pooch had been suffering with a metal pipe on his head for what is believed to be weeks, before someone captured and freed him. The Mississippi-based rescue group, Coco’s House Senior Sanctuary and Rescue, alerted Facebook followers to Cletus’ plight less than a week ago, writing:

Cletus hasn’t had a good life yet. At 1 year of age he has know not love or kindness.
We do not know how this ended up on his head.
But our guess is someone being cruel put it on him.
He is not scared, he is not jumpy, nothing that we would expect from a feral or street dog.
He is gentle and not one time has shown any aggression, again not a typical stray living on the streets boy.

After being captured, the pipe was removed and Cletus went to a veterinary clinic to begin treatment for malnourishment, parasites, heartworms, and general neglect. According to the rescue group, Cletus is a sweet boy who dislikes loud noises. He will soon be ready to go to a foster home, and then, a forever home!

You can follow this pup’s journey to health and wellness at this link to the rescue group’s Facebook page. Enjoy your new life Cletus!

Sanctuary Takes In Four Big Cats From Tiger King Park

A North Carolina animal sanctuary has taken in four big cats from the Tiger King Park in Oklahoma. According to a news release from the Carolina Tiger Rescue, a total of 68 big cats were seized from Jeffrey and Lauren Lowe’s Thackerville park.

The four felines that went to Carolina Tiger Rescue will be cared for until the U.S. Department of Justice obtains permanent forfeiture of all 68 felines, which include lions, tigers, lion-tiger hybrid species, and a single jaguar. The rescue group stated that the big cats will receive, “the best in veterinary care, diets, daily enrichment, and enclosure space and design.”

Pam Fulk, Executive Director of the rescue group, stated, “We are glad to see the Department of Justice working hard to better the lives of big cats in captivity, beginning with Tiger King Park.”

According to Federal officials, the 68 cats were seized because of Endangered Species Act violations.

About: Carolina Tiger Rescue is a 501(c)3 GFAS-accredited nonprofit wildlife sanctuary dedicated to saving and protecting wild cats in captivity and in the wild. We work toward a day when wild cats are living in their native habitats and not exploited by humans.

Cat Survives Harrowing Ride In Engine Of Car

A cat in Bloomfield, New Jersey, used up one of his nine lives after a harrowing ride beneath the hood of a car. The cat, dubbed Jaws, suffered bumps, bruises and a broken jaw during the frightening ride, but he survived. Earlier this month, the Bloomfield Animal Shelter recounted Jaws’ ordeal, writing:

This cat took a ride in the hood of a car yesterday, Monday 5/3/2021, and was discovered when car parked on Cleveland Terrace near Llewellyn Ave in Bloomfield. Driver was unsure of how long the cat was inside and only drove locally – Bloomfield & Newark.

According to the shelter, Jaws does not appear to be feral, and they were hopeful that an owner would be found, but nobody came forward to claim him as their own. He has, however, undergone reconstructive jaw surgery and he is recuperating well. On May 15, the shelter let Facebook followers know that Jaws has finished his medications and he will be able to have the wire in his jaw removed after a few weeks of healing.

Cat lovers have been donating wet food for Jaws, and donations have been made towards his ongoing care. You can follow Jaws as he continues to recuperate at this link to the shelter’s Facebook page.

Firefighters Save Dog Whose Head Was Stuck In A Pipe

This week, a dog, whose head was hopelessly trapped inside of a metal pipe, received a helping hand from firefighters with the Kennett Fire Department. Missouri’s Kennett Humane Department recounted the heroic efforts which led to the dog’s freedom:

KFD responded to Black Gold Potato Farm where the dog was located. KFD was able to cut the pipe so the dog could be brought to Kennett Veterinary Clinic. Upon arrival to Dr. Mobley’s the dog was given meds to help her calm down. The KFD was then able to cut even more of the pipe away. The dog was then taken in to the O.R. vented. Dr. Mobley was able to lubricate and manipulate the dogs head enough to free the dog from pipe. The dog is being kept at Kennett Veterinary Clinic for fluid and observation.

The pooch, dubbed Piper Rose, had been trapped in the pipe long enough to become dehydrated. But she is going to make a full recovery thanks to the hard-working firefighters who did their utmost to free her, and Dr. Mobley, who came to the rescue on his day off to help safely free Piper Rose’s head from the pipe.

Kudos to this amazing rescue team!

Homeless Dog Completely Ignored At Adoption Event

A senior dog named Yahtzee recently attended a festival in Pasadena, Texas, and he did his utmost to win the hearts of everyone that he encountered. The seven-year-old mixed breed dog was one of multiple dogs with the Pasadena Animal Shelter who attended Strawberry Fest, and though Yahtzee was on his very best behavior, nobody wanted him.

The shelter shared Yahtzee’s story on Facebook Tuesday morning, writing:

At Strawberry Fest, Yahtzee calmly watched all the activity. He gave love to all the people big and small. He was good around the dogs. None of that mattered. Or has mattered for the last four months. That’s how long Yahtzee has been in the shelter…

Explaining that Yahtzee had to return to the shelter:

Other dogs went to Strawberry Fest and left with excited families. Yahtzee (A152370) went back to the shelter. Nobody wanted him.

Man Wrestles Gator To Save His Puppy

A Florida man wrestled a 7-to-9 foot alligator to save his puppy from being killed. On Tuesday, Mike McCoy was walking his eight-month-old Chocolate Labrador retriever, Jake, near a pond in Holiday when the gator emerged from the water and grabbed the pooch. McCoy said, “He was in the death roll with that old gator.”

Jake’s owner didn’t hesitate to jump into the fray to save his pup. He told ABC Action News, “I previously read up on my environment and gators. I got around, thumbed him the eye, picked him out of the water so he couldn’t get anywhere until he let the dog go. And in the interim he decided, I don’t have him, I’ll bite you.”

Jake and Mike were injured enough to get stitches, but both are expected to make a full recovery. And though the encounter was dangerous, Mike says that he “didn’t think twice” about saving his four-legged friend, telling the news agency that there was “No hesitation. It’s just the way it is.”

Wildlife officials are working with a trapper to find and remove the alligator from the pond.

The black cat “bounced” after hitting the ground, then walked away, apparently unscathed by his death-defying jump. There were no injuries reported in the fire.

‘Cat-Astrophe’ In Houston As Tiger Remains At Large

There’s a “cat-astrophe” in Houston, Texas, as a Bengal tiger remains at large. The big cat, who allegedly lived with 28-year-old Victor Hugo Cuevas, was spotted roaming a West Houston neighborhood on Mother’s Day; the police were attempting to arrest Cuevas when he put the exotic cat into a Jeep and drove away.

Houston Police Department Commander Ron Borza told ABC News:

“The owner put the tiger in a white SUV and drove off from the scene, there was a brief pursuit, and the man got away with the tiger.”

The Houston Police Department later Tweeted that Cuevas had been arrested, but the tiger remained at large.

The authorities have promised to find a safe haven for the big cat when and if he is found, stating,

“We have plenty of places we can take that tiger, keep it safe and give it a home for the rest of his life.”

Mountain Biker’s Dog Found Abandoned Kitten In The Woods

An kitten, abandoned deep in the woods of Licking County, Ohio, was rescued thanks to a mountain biker’s dog, who noticed her in a tree. On Thursday, May 6, the Licking County Humane Society posted a GoPro video of the rescue effort, explaining what happened:

A good Samaritan and past #LCHSpets adopter was alerted by his dog on a mountain bike ride to something deep in the woods. This video shows his go-pro capture of the events that happened next. 🙀

The shelter believes that the kitten had been dumped, writing:

This kitten was found stranded, likely dumped, in the middle of a remote wooded area with no houses, shelter, or other feline or human beings for miles.

The shelter thanked the man who took the time to investigate when his dog noticed that something was amiss:

We’d like to thank the good Samaritan for saving this kitten’s life and contacting us to see if he could bring it into the shelter for care and eventual adoption.

The kitten has been dubbed Fuji (named after her rescuer’s mountain bike) and she isn’t available for adoption yet, but she should be soon!

Meet Buffy, The Hospital Covid-Detecting Dog

Meet Buffy, a yellow Labrador retriever who has been specially trained to sniff out the Covid-19 virus at a hospital in Florida. The two-year-old dog trained with Southeastern Guide Dogs for nine months before she started working at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota. Laska Parrow, a certified service dog trainer with Southeastern Guide Dogs, commented on Buffy’s accuracy, telling Fox 13 News:

“She is 95% accurate. We did lots of blind trials where the handler doesn’t know where the virus is and Buffy does because she can smell it.”

Buffy isn’t just a stellar Covid-19 detector, she is also a tail-wagging, four-legged canine “comforter” to patients and staff at the hospital. And when he shift is done, she gets to head home with Robert Meade, the hospital’s CEO. Meade’s family adopted the specially trained pooch. Meade tells PEOPLE:

“She’s become our mascot at the hospital. Everybody loves Buffy. It’s nice for the employees. They’ve been through a lot in the last year. Having Buffy is therapy for all of us.”

Second-Grader Raised Over $2,000 For Shelter Animals

In April, an ambitious second-grader raised over $2,000 for shelter animals in East Haven, Connecticut. The boy behind the sweet gesture is seven-year-old Connor Vece. His grandmother, Mary Correia, explained how the idea came to life, after he expressed the desire to give his money to shelter dogs, telling Yahoo News:

“I asked if he wanted to do a pet food drive where we can collect dog food right in front of our house, and he said yes.”

The pair set up shop in Correia’s driveway, using some music to attract fellow animal lovers, and Correia’s granddaughter sported a dog-costume to help collect donations. In short order, droves of supporters from all around East Haven arrived to make donations of food, money, and supplies for the East Haven Animal Shelter.

On April 24, the shelter posted photos from the event, and expressed gratitude for the donations:

“Thank you all so so very much, I gasped when I saw how much was collected!! You are amazing!!!”

Great job Connor! What an amazing act of kindness.

Animal Service Officers Rescue Unusual Alligator

Animal control officers are always ready to rescue an animal in need, whether it’s a stray dog, or a wild animal. And earlier this week, officers in Iowa were called out to investigate a particularly “wild” report about an alligator that had been spotted outside of an apartment complex in Des Moines.

Though Iowa isn’t known for having alligators, animal control officers were more than willing to investigate the matter after concerned residents reported seeing a four-to-five-foot long gator lounging on the pavement of the apartment complex parking lot.

Responding officers soon discovered that there was more than meets the eye in this strange alligator case. It turned out that the large reptilian creature in the parking lot was just a misplaced stuffed animal. The rogue gator was apprehended and taken to Animal Rescue League (ARL) Animal Services for care.
